How to Find the Right Therapist for You?
Finding a therapist you can connect with that feels like a good fit can be difficult. Scheduling a call with a therapist before you commit to a session can be helpful in figuring out if that provider has an approach that would work for your needs, personality and goals.
Keep the following in mind during your first consultation:
You’re in the driver seat! ask the questions that you really want to know. Is experience something that matters to you? it is okay to ask. Are you someone that is more interested in approach, focus on that. This is your time to interview and get a feel for the therapist.
Are you something that drives in hyper-structured environments or that needs something more supportive, go-with-the-flow of the week while keeping to your overall therapy goals? knowing yourself and what works for you is important because not all therapists conduct sessions the same way. Some therapists are rigid some less so. Knowing what environments you thrive in will help you determine what approach works better for you.
Is it important to you that your therapist has shared life experiences which are crucial to your own? for example, if you are a person of color, member of the LGBTQI+ etc. is it important to you that your therapist has shared in a similar lived experience? If so, considered bringing this up during your consultation.
