Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Right for Me?
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT?
Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is a form of psychotherapy which is evidence-based and shown to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship issues, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Research has shown it can be used to treat children, teens and adults. CBT may be the most researched treatment modality out there! There is substantial research studies which suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has shown to be as effective as, or more effective than, psychotropic medication alone.
How does it work?
By learning to recognize one’s unhelpful ways of thinking which can lead to “spiraling” thoughts or behaviors and worsening mood
Learning to recognize patterns of ineffective and unhealthy behavior
Engaging in coping skills which can stop these thoughts and behaviors and, thus, improve your mood.
Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
Learning to develop a greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.
Facing one’s fears instead of avoiding them.
Using role playing to prepare for potentially problematic interactions with others.
Learning to calm one’s mind and relax one’s body.
A CBT therapist can guide you through the process of learning and skillfully utilizing these skills to improve your depressed or anxious mood, alleviate panic attacks, improve relationships with others and manage substance abuse.
A CBT therapist will largely focus in the present and will work toward stabilization. Once one is stable, the therapist and client can dive into trauma processing, attachment issues etc.
